The Farmer’s Market in Thomaston is temporarily closed. It will re-open when the fall crops are harvested.
Until then, there will be sweet potatoes on sale at the Rural Heritage Center gift shop beginning October 6th for $1.00/pound.

Talladega National Forest-Oakmulgee District's 4th Annual National Public Lands Day Event

(Brent, Al) September 10, 2010 ---- The Talladega National Forest - Oakmulgee District and Americorps VISTA are joining forces to host a National Public Lands Day event. Scheduled for September 25, 2010, the event welcomes all who want to celebrate their natural heritage. Join us for an opportunity to fellowship and learn about the rich natural history of the Oakmulgee District. Black Heritage Council hosts historic preservation forum in York

The Black Heritage Council of the Alabama Historical Commission invites the public to attend a historic preservation forum in the town of York, Saturday, September 25.
The Forum will be held at 10:00 am at the Hightower Center, 615 2nd Avenue in downtown York. The Forum is free and everyone is encouraged to attend!

Please join the Black Heritage Council and York community leaders to discuss strategies for preserving the town’s historic resources for community and economic development. Information on tourism, tax incentives for historic buildings and heir property will be presented.

Alabama Black Belt Heritage Area promotes downtown development

The Alabama Black Belt Heritage Area and Main Street Alabama hosted a half-day workshop recently in promotion of downtown development efforts.
Some 100 attendees from across Alabama discussed the importance of placing emphasis on a city’s downtown. According to workshop leaders, downtown development benefits local citizens and visitors alike.

“Your downtown is a reflection of what other people think of you,” said guest speaker Bob Wilson, executive director of Mississippi Main Street Association.

Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP) is a training program provided by the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions, and organization committed to supporting the work of local preservation commissions. National speakers will bring their expertise on the meeting topics. Past workshops in Demopolis and Mobile have received positive reviews from Alabama preservation commission members and city officials. We encourage all commission members, staff and city officials from our CLG communities and towns interested in the program to attend.
