LIVINGSTON, Ala.— The Alabama Black Belt Heritage Area and Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum at Alabama Southern Community College will host an afternoon of sharing and preserving stories Friday, Nov. 19 at the ASCC campus in Thomasville.
A vital part of the cultural preservation of the Black Belt, “where the stories are as rich as the land” storytelling has played an essential role in carrying traditions through the ages of the region’s residents.

Army Corps of Engineers waives day-use fees at recreation areas on Veterans Day
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) today announced it will waive day-use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members, and their families at the more than 2,400 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, November 11.

When the Montgomery Ballet brings Midsummer Night’s Dream to Selma on Thursday, Nov. 4, more than 40 Selma dance students will be part of the cast.
Like several other students, 11-year-old Dashia Purdie will dance with professionals for the very first time. “She is very excited, and it’s all she’s talking about,” said her mother, Sandra Purdie. Dashia is an eighth year ballet student at The Dance Studio, one of three participating Selma studios.
Kenan’s Mill Fall Festival & Bluegrass Event will be Saturday, Nov. 6 at the 1860’s gristmill near Selma.
Gates open at 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Live music (fiddler Caleb Bryant, The Grasshopper Stringband, The Carrell Family) begins at 11.

The millstones on Valley Creek turn again Saturday, Nov. 6 at the ninth annual Kenan’s Mill Fall Festival & Bluegrass Event.
The celebration of rural life and Black Belt heritage begins at 9 a.m. at the 1860’s gristmill located about a mile north of Selma on Summerfield Road (County Road 37). Admission is just $5 per car.
